Seminar discussion: The profile of "a good consultant"

Questions received by Wednesday 18.30 are grouped under the following headlines:


Consultant's capabilities

5.1. What is your job description as a consultant? And what does it include?

6.5)   What kind of standard of education does the stuff have in SKM Oy ?

2.2. What kind of a person should the counsult be: education, personal skills, experience, etc?

3.1 In your opinion, what age should a consultant have if he decides to work abroad? Especially refering to developing countries, is it wise to have more "life-experience" to handle situations there?

7.2 So how much the consultant in the field of mapping and geoinformation should know about these [ESt: language, culture and legal matters] and other issues when working in a foreign country, and

7.3 what kind of education and knowledge, beside the technical capability, he needs in order to manage performing his job.

3.2 Most people today agree on the adavantage of quicker and thereby shorter studies at universities. On the other hand, one could mention that these young university graduates haven't had enough time to develop their personality. Which way would you recommend to students who consider working abroad for a consulting agency after their studies?

3.3 Do you think that it is important or can be an advantage to change the company for which you work after some years?
 
 

Project Preparations

6.1) What things consultant must consider when acting abroad ?

4.4: What information sources have you used before the project to find out about the circumstances in a certain country?

2.3. What kind of material is usually available and what is quality of that in registers and in the field works?
 

Project methodology

4.1: Did you have problems with the methods you planned to use in the different projects? If yes, can you explain what went wrong?

7.1 When working with foreign consultants in Libya, in the field of architecture and urban planning, there was usually problem resulting from that foreign consultant are not aware enough of the local issues:
- Language
- Culture and tradition
- Legal process and laws
[ESt: In your experience, are these difficulties found in other countries/projects as well ? How can the problems be addresed? ]
 

Project acquisition and management

2.1. How do you get your projects and how do you find the local counterpart in the country in the question?

5.2. How are projects financed?

4.2: How many people have there been working together in these projectgroups? How many people were local?

6.2)   When acting abroad does the consultant do only  tasks of the consulting [ESt giving advice, analyse, monitor ?]
and the locals practice [ do the practical work ?] ?

6.3)   Does the buyer pay order or is there aid to be use (National Bank etc.) ?
 

The market of consulting

2.4. Are there lack of qualified counsults in any of those countries you've  worked? If there are, can you specify the situation in that country and what kind of consultation is needed?

6.4)   Are tasks increasing f.e. in Eastern countries or in Asia ?
 

General questions

4.3: What is the most difficult task in working abroad?

3.4 What kind of life is that [working abroad], especially when you take your family with you, living and working abroad in a developing country?

2.5. What is your opinion about the following problem? In developing countries  the land ownership circumstances are not always clear. For ex. in Cambodia the ownerships before 1979 are not recognised. ( in -75 Khmer Rouge came into power
and in -79 Vietnamese took the controll over the country.) If the person has possessed the parcel at least five years he can get the land title. Sometimes many persons can claim the same land. The point is that should those who once owned the land regain the ownership or is it "fair" that those who are possessing the land are having the land title?
