Research

My field of research is transport and mobility of persons and goods. The focus is specifically upon the geography of transport networks, transport related to regional development and the challenges facing the transport sector in terms of environmental and social sustainable development.

In a number of studies and projects the scope has been to analyse different dimensions of the freight transport sector, spatial planning and regional development:

  • The effects of the fixed links of Storebaelt and Oresund on the logistical structures of industries and firms. The purpose of the study was to assess the fixed links' impact on transport and traffic growth
  • The embedding of road freight companies in socio-economic and territorial networks in order to gain flexibility for the organisation and co-ordination of transport activities
  • How transport activities can facilitate network capabilities through the co-operation between clusters of freight companies and specific industrial sectors (industrial districts)
  • The interface between different actors related to the transport sector - e.g. transport companies, transport customers, local and national planning authorities, industrial organisations, etc.

Besides transport and mobility my theoretical interests are related to economic geography (e.g. innovation processes in localised industrial milieus) and economic sociology (e.g. governance structures in industrial networks). Methodologically, I have a great interest in applying and developing approaches related to qualitative methods (e.g. qualitative research interviews) and action research (scenario workshops).
