Current Research

Wind Energy in the Baltic Sea Region (Work package manager)
The wind energy market is one of the main focuses within the current renewable energy development. The project will give a contribution to a well-balanced sustainable development within the BSR in general, generating a leading-position of the BSR-region within the EU. This goal will be reached by co-ordinating know-how from partners in „experienced“ BSR-areas with the local inside knowledge of partners from weaker regions and by integrating views of politicians, planners, lawyers, researchers and companies. The research is done at NERI and is financed by EU INTERREG III B

Watersketch (Work Package Manager)
Different directives and conventions are producing contradictory tasks and demands. Difficult to merge the forms of use and demands of society into network of directives, conventions and legislation in river basin planning . The aim of the project is to prepare a strategy and develop GIS based tools balancing competing interests of river basin planning in the Baltic Sea Region. The research is done at NERI and is financed by EU INTERREG III B.

Geographic Information, Public Participation and Environmental Decision-making
Public participation is a major issue in sustainable development and planning, and GI technology has recently been a involved in this field by using Web-GIS (PPGIS). The aim of the project is partly to develop new taxonomies for GIS based public participation and part to analyse real implementations of PPGIS. The so-called digital divide will be addressed in the project as well.

Uncertainty in Geographic Information
A Nordic cooperation project in the ScanGIS research group on Uncertainty in GI. The focus of the research group is to work on taxonomies on “spatial uncertainty” as well as supporting practical implementations of inaccuracy, fuzziness etc.

Nordic Grid (Project Manager)
Denmark has already a de facto standard for a national square grid, and as part of the INSPIRE initiative a draft proposal for a European Grid is defined. The purpose of the current project is to develop a regional grid covering Scandinavia.

Completed Research

Planning System for Sustainable development
PSSD - Planning System for Sustainable Development - is a part of the Baltic Sea Region's INTERREG II C program. The aim of the project was to develop theories, methods and tools for sustainable development and planning. The role of indicators in sustainable development is discussed and a Web-based indicator generator was developed. One of the main results of the project was a Web-based interface to the methods and tools, the so-called Planner's TOOLBOX .

Land-use classification in urban areas
As part of the Area Information System (Ministry of Environment) a detailed land use mapping of the built-up areas was prepared. The urban land use mapping was based on the Danish Building & Dwelling Register as well as the national Square Grid. The database is available free of charge. A co-operation project between NERI and the Danish Forest and Landscape Research Institute.

Integration of digital maps and administrative registers
The project made a detailed overview of the most important national databases with spatial information and presented a guide to the integration of digital maps and administrative databases. The first part described the individual databases regarding among other things admittance, contents and database keys, of which the last one is of great importance in joining digital maps and administrative databases. The second part of the report focuses on the efforts to integrate digital maps and administrative databases.

Spatial disaggregation of atmospheric emission statistics
This project developed methods and techniques for spatial disaggregation of national emission inventories.
